Tastemaker: Bay Area Family

Bay Area Family

We are a family of 4 living on the Peninsula. I have 2 wonderful children: my girl who is a doll, she is 11 and my boy who is 6. Plus, we have a big hairy dog!
When it's not school or work time, we love working on our small but productive garden, cooking and eating together.
My husband works out early in the morning and then rides his bike on the weekends, but he prefers his golf.
I have a book club with my friends and love playing tennis-I'm addicted.
We are constantly going to soccer practice, baseball, swimming, dance, music lessons,...it's amazing these kids have time to sleep! But they seem to like keeping busy, and keeping us busy driving them around!
We get out too...we go to plays, concerts, movies, shopping, and dinners with friends!
Travel is also important to us, we want to expose our children to the world at a young age.
There is so much to do in the Bay Area that keeps us pretty busy.
It's important to keep a balance ...or at least try and keep a balance.

It's Always Messy in Philly

March 3rd, 2010, 2:28 p.m.

Kids hate napkins. This is a fact. They will never like them. They are the enemy and they will squirm and take flight at first sight. Like a pair of black dress socks, the napkin will only be utilized on the child under the force of a parent. Most of the time we are feverishly in hot pursuit of our little munchkins with spit-soaked napkin in tow; unless we have dinner at Phat Philly’s.

Right now Phat Philly’s is offering half off all beer (for us, not the kids), fries and wings (no napkin needed…until we leave the premises) for all Mobile Spinach members

A Hole in Our One and Only

February 18th, 2010, 11:42 a.m.

So our daughter is approaching an age when many of her friends are having their ears pierced; thank lord it’s just ears…for now. Navel is next and then I’m sure she’ll start regretting some decisions. Well as long as it’s not tattoos. Piercings can heal, same with battered egos. Since we are a city family there is no going to “The Mall” for our daughter’s first, and LAST, piercing experience.

Mobile Spinach has a discount at Body Manipulations in the Mission:

Body Manipulations in the Mission offers $15 off any piercing service
Body Manipulations Body Piercing
San Francisco Mission District’s finest body art boutique offers piercings, tattoos and jewelry in an extremely sanitary and inviting setting. Body Manipulations has been decorating and adorning the visages of San Franciscans since 1989. Skill artisans, this is not just a tattoo parlor or a piercing station at “the mall”, Body Manipulations is an environment breeding creativity and nurturing talent transforming the body into canvas.

Mobile Spinach is proud to help Body Manipulations offer $15 off any piercing when displaying a Mobile Spinach Text Alert.

Letting your teenage daughter finally pierce her ears? Trying out the lip ring you’ve always fetished for? Now’s the time!

President's Day Weekend is Soooo Romantic

February 11th, 2010, 2:18 p.m.

Valentine’s Day Weekend! That means we’ve secured a sitter for our little angels and we get some fun ‘adult’ time. If only we could find a babysitting service that would want to market themselves through Mobile Spinach. For now, we’ll just use our discounts on dinner and hotels and use the excel money on that babysitter.

Here are some of our options this Valentine’s Day and President’s Day weekend:

Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa offers 25% off hotel rooms

Who can say Baba Ghanoush 5 time really fast with a month full of Hummas?

February 3rd, 2010, 12:49 p.m.

San Francisco is famous for international cuisine and flare and we want our kids to grow up in that atmosphere. We’ve written a ton in this blog concerning how our kids must try everything once, concerning food and if they do not like it then they don’t have to eat it ever again if they don’t want to. La Mediterranean in Pacific Heights on Fillmore and Sacrament is the perfect opportunity to practice what we preach.

Also, much of the Middle Eastern cuisine La Med serves is finger-food, well, technically if we were actually in the Mid-East I believe it would be all finger food so that makes the kids all the more anxious to try new dishes.

Right now La Med is offering a free hummus plate to each table with a Mobile Spinach member that is seated after 5pm. Perfect! Early dinner, early bed time, earlier wine and TV time for The Parents!

Power out? Recharge with Pizza Power!

January 19th, 2010, 3:21 p.m.

This is supposed to be the wettest week since the winter of 2005. Sweetie and I love the storms that roll in off the Pacific. We love to just sit there and watch the rain slosh up against our windows, threatening our family through double pained safety. But Monopoly and Clue can only go so far when the power goes out. That’s when we start considering restaurants to frequent. First we figure out the ones that have power. Next, we look through our Mobile Spinach discounts in our text messages to find a reasonably priced restaurant with a great discount. This week, just in time for the storm of the year we have….drum roll please…..

Mozzarella di Bufala!

Mozzarella di Bufala Pizzeria offers 1/2 price on pizza when you dine in Monday through Thursday from 5pm-7pm

Bring in the family and friends and settle in for a pizza pie!

I Scream, You Scream…if anyone else screams we are NOT getting ice cream!

January 13th, 2010, 2:32 p.m.

Who doesn’t love ice cream please raise you ice cream cone? Gotcha. School is back in session for the kids so if they want treats of any kind, for example, Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, they must know that first come the good marks in school, then comes the Ben and Jerry’s, then comes the napkin covered with their mother’s saliva to clean up all facial messes. Here’s our deal:

Ben & Jerry’s Haight Ashbury offers any flavor: $1 Ice Cream Bars, $2 Pints, $3 Quarts!

We striving as well to mold our offspring into true Californians and part of that plan includes introducing them to Sushi…good Sushi. Right now Mobile Spinach has THREE different deals with Blowfish Sushi in Potrero Hill.

This one is great for our when we take out dinner:

Blowfish offers any signature roll for free for January.

This next one is perfect for the “grown-ups” when we come in later on in the evening:

Blowfish Sushi offers a carafe of house sake or signature Blowfish Sake Cocktail if you dine after nine.

While the kids where out of school we got to use this deal quite a bit:

Blowfish Sushi come in M-F for lunch 1130-230 & choose ANY one signature roll free. One per table.

Culture Walk

January 6th, 2010, 1:01 p.m.

We know it’s cold but the kids must get out of the house while we patiently await the start of school (please hurry.) During the holidays it’s great having them home, as it is now, it can just be a little overwhelming…all the time. So, to keep their noodle’s jogging while no homework is present and get them out of the house we are going to take them on a walking tour of China town. All About China Town Walking Tours (www.allaboutchinatown.com) has a %15 off deal with Mobile Spinach right now so we’ll be enjoying some Dim Sum and taking in some wondrous scents and souvenirs from San Francisco’s China Town.

Wham Bam Fam Zoo Jam

December 30th, 2009, 1:27 p.m.

It’s been suggested that we find a sitter for the kids and hit the town for our NYE but we are thinking not. We’ve had our fill of expensive NYE parties that are over crowded and over run by those who don’t usually entertain themselves via nightlife. So…we might even let the kids stay up and if it’s not to cold venture down to the waterfront to watch the fireworks. Supposedly they are upping the police presence to keep all the drunken hordes away from my little munchkins. Hooray! Here are a few deals we’ll be using as a family. Happy New Year!

• Francisco Zoo offers 1 complimentary child admission w purchase of 1 adult admission

• Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Museum offers %10 discounts on tickets.

Chuck the Chuck-E

December 9th, 2009, 1:06 p.m.

Of course our kids like pizza but sometimes we need a little more variety and flavor than Chuck-E-Cheese’s (nothing against dancing rats and Ski-ball). We found Mozzarella di Bufala that serves Brazilian and has pizza for the kids and wasted no time in getting a Mobile Spinach discount going so we could come back at half the price!

Mozzarella di Bufala Pizzeria offers 1/2 price on pizza when you dine in mon-thurs from 5pm-7pm.
This is a Brazilian restaurant with pizza too located in West Portal, which I would like to add
has easy free parking plus the muni goes there. Great toppings so you can create your own pizza
as well as unreal Feijoada!
